It's always a challenge to recreate an outside space indoors.  Building a beach for this show was a long process, despite its structural simplicity.  The structure of the set - pre-decoration - is shown on the left.
The biggest challenge was weathering the lumber to create a sea salt and wind worn look.  Treating the material was a 5 step process including multiple stains, paint, polyearthane glaze, and sanding the surface to create wear.
We were able to get some old wood  - a telephone pole taken down after a storm - and used it to create a collection of wooden  collumns emerging from the ocean.
Check back later to see an image of the fully decorated set!

Josh Langfus '15 - Actor

Hey, my name is Josh Langfus, and I'll be playing the roles of Ed and Ty in The Coming World.
Theater has always been a part of my life, and that hasn't changed since I came to college. Working with the Barnstormers has given me a chance not only to take a break from the academics and do something I love, but also to take what I've learned in the acting classes I've taken here at Hopkins and apply those skills in the real world of theater.  It's been a challenging process, particularly because The Coming World has only three roles. As actors, we certainly feel that the success of the show rests solely on our abilities to affect one another - to find what we want and surmount whatever obstacles may lie in our way in order to achieve our goals. Lien, our director, has done a great job helping us build our characters from the inside out. She constantly forces us to examine our motivations - why did you do that? What do you want? What happens if you don't get what you want? - which causes us to delve deeply into our characters. Since Ed and Ty are two totally different types of people, one challenge that I've faced is distinguishing them in such a way that the distinction does not seem forced. Yesterday in rehearsal, however, Lien suggested that perhaps these characters may have the same kind of energy and motivation, but that they just channel their desires in different ways. This really helped me find Ty, in particular. Overall, it's been a pleasure working with Barnstormers on this show. The whole production team has been professional and friendly, and it really feels like we have a whole group of people supporting us through the whole process.
